Ortovox Avalanche Transceiver Update Service

As an authorised retailer of Ortovox back country equipment we sell the outstanding range of Ortovox Avalanche Transceivers, including the S1, 3Plus, Patroller and the new for 2012-13 Zoom models.

As an independent wintersports retailer we like to be able to offer a complete service, so we have one of very few Ortovox UP-BOX2 transceiver updaters. This hardware and software ensures your S1, S1+ and 3+ transceiver is as up to date as possible.

HOW IT WORKS

Ortovox offer update bulletins on a regular basis for their transceivers. If you have registered your transceiver then normally this is communicated via email, but you can also check on the Ortovox website for the latest bulletins:

If you establish that there is an update available it is always recommended that you do update to the latest software, as you will then have the latest version available on your device with the most recent refinements. Software updates often improve performance of a device (Such as battery life) in addition to keeping your device up to date.

Many dealers charge for updating transceivers, we do this service FREE OF CHARGE. We feel it is important that safety equipment should always be in peak condition and therefore offer the transceiver update service for free. You can come into our showroom during opening hours, and we can update your transceiver in just a few moments.

If you are not local, we can do an update remotely for you, you need to safely package and post your transceiver to us, and we can then undertake the update for you. We will then contact you to arrange payment of return shipping by courier, which is £7.50. Turnaround is normally quite fast, but we recommend doing this out of season so that you avoid any rush, and so that it prompts you to check your transceiver is fully operational and batteries are OK!

Please not that if you are receiving an error code an update will NOT resolve this. Follow the instructions supplied with the transceiver. We are a service agent for Ortovox so you can return the item for us for repair, but all Ortovox repairs are returned to base, so DO NOT wait until a week before a trip to get your transceiver fixed, if it has developed a fault it needs to be returned for repair as soon as possible!

When you are based outside of the UK, you can select your country at the shopping basket to get an indication of our shipping costs. If an item is large in size or heavy in weight, we may have to contact you before shipping the item to advise the actual shipping cost. You have the option to cancel your order at any time.

We cannot ship Avalanche Airbags overseas on a standard service. Shipping of an avalanche airbag requires a Hazardous Materials shipping service. We can give you a quotation and you can decide whether to pay the shipping charge, or we can sometimes offer avalanche airbags without the canister to make shipping easier. Please contact us for details before ordering!

TAX & DUTY - BUYING ON OUR WEBSITE

When we ship items to you, within the EU no duty will be applied, as the relevant VAT tax has already been applied. If you are outside of the EU, then tax must be paid when it arrives in your country, at your local rates, along with any applicable duty and charges. When we ship outside the EU and to the Channel Islands we do remove the UK VAT (currently 20%), but do be aware you will be liable for your local taxes and duty!

PLEASE NOTE: We will not reduce the price on the paperwork to a lower price to reduce your taxes! This is illegal so we will ignore any requests to do this.

When you buy on our website, those countries outside the EU, and the Channel Islands, will have the UK VAT removed when you go to the checkout to pay for your order. We cannot amend figures before shipping, so please do not be offended when we say no! If you want to know more about how much tax and duty you will have to pay when your order arrives in your country please contact your local tax office. VAT can only be claimed back on items that are eligible for VAT.

BFPO – We currently cannot remove VAT from orders shipping via BFPO, as we are obliged to post to the central BFPO sorting office which is based in the UK, which means we cannot provide suitable evidence to the HMRC that the goods have been shipped to a non-EU country.

TAX & DUTY - BUYING IN OUR SHOWROOM

Edge & Wax are part of the VAT Retail Export Scheme. International travellers from outside the EU are in most cases able to claim the VAT back on their purchases. There is a process that must be followed to do this.

This is how to claim back the VAT:

At the time of purchase simply inform a member of staff in-store that you are an international visitor and wish to claim back the VAT on your purchase.
Our staff will provide you with, and help you complete a VAT 407 form. This form is completed with details of your purchase, your contact details and details of the credit card you would like your refund processed. You still need to pay for the item(s) in FULL with VAT at this point.
Present the completed VAT 407 form, along with your receipt and goods at the Customs Desk at your departing port. It is important that HM Customs stamp your form, without this stamp your claim will be invalid. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you visit the Customs Desk at the departing airport or port BEFORE you check in your luggage. If you do not have the item(s) and the VAT 407 form and your passport ready, you will not be able to apply for a refund. SO do NOT CHECK IN LUGGAGE until you have visited the Customs Desk!
Upon successfully submitting the form, the form will be returned to Edge & Wax and we will process your VAT refund to your original payment card.

Who do we use to to deliver your order in the UK?

For UK deliveries, we use Royal Mail 1st Class Post or Fedex couriers, depending on the size and value of the package.

In most cases a signature will be required, so please ensure that someone will be available to sign for the parcel. Alternatively you can request an alternative shipping address at the checkout, or leave a note in the shipping instructions such as “please leave with a neighbour”. We cannot always promise that it will be possible to follow shipping instructions, and we also cannot take responsibility for the loss of a package if you request it to be left somewhere.

How do we ship International Orders?

For international orders we will use Royal Mail Airmail, Airsure or TNT depending on the country, size, weight and value of the order. In all cases you can select the tracked package option for an additional fee at the checkout:

Shipping to international countries takes 5-10 working days depending on your location and the size of the consignment. Please ensure you enter the address correctly.

Also, if you are in a mountain resort make yourself fully aware of local restrictions. In some mountain resorts delivery will only be made to a local post office location. We cannot be held responsible in this situation so do make sure BEFORE you order.

When buying a gift for Christmas we understand that sometimes it needs to be exchanged. Here at Edge & Wax, any item bought from the 15th November can be returned up to 15th January (subject to our normal returns policy below) to give you peace of mind when buying a gift for a loved one.

Here at Edge & Wax we wish you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase. In the unlikely event that you are not, please feel free to return your goods within 28 days of the purchase date for a full refund.

Any item (with the exception of food, videos, DVD’s,software, skis that have been set up and waxed or ex-demo skis) can be returned to us for any reason provided it is returned unused with its original packaging and a copy of or the original invoice. Due to the high incidence of fraud we regret that we are unable to offer any refund without a valid copy or original receipt.

We will process any refund using the same method of payment used for the original purchase. Credit & debit card refunds must be made to the card used for the original purchase.

Debit & Credit Card Refunds can take up to 5 working days, even if we process them immediately. This delay is down to your individual bank or credit card company and not due to delays in our refunding you.

Paypal refunds normally take around 5 working days, and is controlled by Paypal.

RETURNING SKIS OR ITEMS OVER £200 IN VALUE

If you wish to return skis then please contact us so that we can arrange a courier collection. Skis must be wrapped to the same standard that they were delivered in, to prevent any damage to the skis. Remember, you are responsible for the safe return of the package!
Skis that have had the bindings DRILLED and mounted are effectively determined as used, as they have been set to your specific boot sole length and therefore we cannot subsequently resell them. We can refund skis on a rail based system as these can be reset.

Please note: Depending on the reasons for returning an item a charge may be incurred for arranging a courier.

Help–Buying Ski Clothing Online

When buying ski and snowboard clothing from Edge & Wax we want to make it as easy as possible to buy the correct size, the most important factor when buying clothing online.

We provide sizing charts from the brands of clothing we sell. These are given to us by the manufacturers, but THEN we test these sizing charts. If we feel they are a little out for our customers we will always put a comment in to summarise the fit. If there is no UK sizing on the garment, we all try the clothing on, men’s and women’s, so we can advise the UK equivalent size.

Arc’Teryx runs very true on fit, they have a couple of cuts offering plenty of articulation and these are the styles we tend to stock!

A close fitting base layer works best, so always consider this. At the end of the day, its hidden below all your other layers so don't worry about the look, just go for the fit!

Pretty on the money for fit, go for your normal size for a great against-the-skin fit.

Tops

Women: Measure across your back, under your arms and then across the widest part of your bust, don't 'squash' yourself.

Bottoms

Women: Measure around your body at the fullest part of the hips.

Men: Measure at your navel.

Schoffel use a classic cut on their products, if you are between sizes, we would recommend that you pick the larger size to ensure a good fit.

A looser fitting range of garment without being around-your-knees baggy for a modern look. Scott runs pretty true on size, being generous thanks to the cut. The legs on Scott pants are intentionally longer, so that when your ski or snowboard boot is on there is no restriction of movement.

When customers ask about buying boots online, we have a very simple response in most cases – Don’t do it!

The only way to ensure that your ski boot will fit correctly to ensure comfort and performance is to be professionally fitted.

Unlike buying a pair of shoes, or hiring some roomy ski rental boots, when buying your own pair of ski boots doing so without a proper measuring and fitting can be a false economy.

We DO sell ski boots online, which is ideal for those who have been professionally measured and advised on what boot they need, but the boot is unavailable at that fitter.

OUR BOOT FITTING SERVICE

Ski Boot fitting at Edge & Wax is by appointment, to make an appointment it is always best to CALL use rather than email us, on 01403 713 470, so we can discuss any specific requirements and have our diary in front of us to find you a convenient slot.

WHAT IS A GOOD BOOT FIT?

When you have a boot fitting with us, we allocate TIME to do this. Some boot fittings can take 30 minutes, most take longer. If you are having a boot fitting with a custom foot bed you should normally allow 1 hour, sometimes 2 if you have 11 toes, or a specific requirement. Edge & Wax is registered with the British Ski Boot-fitting Association (www.skibootpro.co.uk) to give the highest levels of boot-fitting, and our sister company Boot Camp is a BSBA training centre.

Here is the general process we go through with you:

Here you can see the boot fitting process that we follow at Edge & Wax, to get a better understanding for a good boot fit:

STEP 1 - INTERVIEW

We make a nice cup of tea or coffee, and talk about YOU. What kind of skier or boarder are you? Do you have any issues with your feet cure, or your knees, legs, lower back etc. The feet have a lot to cope with, and it doesn't take much for problems at your feet to translate further up your body. Now we have a basic understanding about you, we move on to the next step.

STEP 2 - ANALYSIS

We have some great equipment to help us with the next steps, our eyes being the best ones! We tried fancy electronic balance systems but decided not to install this and be more hands on instead. (don't get us wrong, they do work). We analyse your feet on what we call a Podoscope, which fires a nice blue light under your feet, and you can see for yourself what is going on. We also have a thermal plate that draws the outline of your foot so you can take a closer inspection.

We then look at your stance, to determine any bowing or canting of your legs, and particularly look at this in relation to your knees and hips, as we want this all working together as one.

From this, we have a profile of your foot, the width of your foot, the length of your foot, and the kind of volume of boot (taking into account calves too) that we should be fitting. We have NOT chosen based on brand or colour!

STEP 3 - FITTING

We now try a few boots out until we find the one that best fits your foot profile and your personal requirements. We haven't looked at budget at this point. This isn't because we only pick expensive boots (although with boots you really do get what you pay for) as sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised and find that a lower price boot is the best one for you.

If you have opted to have custom footbeds at the same time - and we cannot recommend this enough, we will set up the Sidas moulding equipment. This is great fun; your feet are moulded in a silicone bed, which we remove air from to give us your foot profile. We then create footbeds (insoles) specifically for your feet, making adjustments as a result of the step one interview and then these are finished to fit your foot perfectly.

These are then popped into the boots we have worked together to select, and you are given another cup of tea or coffee and the freedom of the showroom to walk around for about 5-10 minutes to see if the boots feel right.

Any issues pointed out to us (e.g., ankle rubbing a little, big toe aching) are noted, the boots whisked into the workshop, and all manner of strange looking tools are used to modify the shape we want for the boot shell.

We then refit, recheck, and if necessary repeat. When it is all done, we have a great fitting boot and your legs pointing in the right direction. A great fitting boot also improves your skiing or boarding, as you will have more control and balance.

STEP 4 - FINISHED?

Now you have your shiny new boots and maybe custom footbeds, it's time to say farewell. But we may see you again! We encourage you to walk around in your boots A LOT before your holiday. We find doing the ironing with them on works well; in fact it makes chores more fun! If you have access to a snowdome, these can be fantastic for boot testing, as a drag lift always reveals any issues.

So if after this you identify any problems, get in touch and we will book you back in for a refit. Even if we have to start from scratch there will be NO CHARGE for this, it's part of our service.

So we hope that you will consider us for your boot fitting. With the combination of a relaxed environment, flexible appointments (we do early mornings and late nights 7 days a week) and a dedication to the best levels of service, we look forward to making your next trip on the pistes a comfortable and precise one!

PRICING

We do not charge fees for boot fitting, you simply pay for the price of the boot.

As stated above, we strongly recommend the fitting of a custom footbed at the same time as fitting a new boot:

Standard Footbed & Boot Fitting: £60.00 (£70 insole only)
The standard footbed is a customised footbed with a plain base. This was the most common footbed until recent additions to the custom footbed line. This is still the best option for the purist or for those wanting a race style fit.

PRO Footbed & Boot Fitting: £70.00 (£68 insole only)
This footbed includes several advantages over the standard footbed. It has an Alacantra forefoot which allows easier entry into the boot, and double reinforcement at the heel cup for stability.

PREMIUM Footbed & Boot Fitting: £80.00 (£90 insole only)
This new footbed is the top-of-the-line. Designed for maximum comfort it has a full reinforced (Transflux) base, a mid length additional support, and "Poron" heel cup for maximum comfort.

Want nice warm feet too?

We can fit a Therm-ic heating element to your footbed for £28 so that you can combine your custom footbed with a Therm-ic battery boot heating system (see our accessories department).

Help–BFPO Shipping

When ordering from BFPO addresses for armed forces, please be aware that the BFPO service has conditions on how the service can be used and what can be shipped. The BFPO website contains a list of goods which may not be shipped to BFPO addresses, click here for further information.

BFPO shipping is NOT free, this is a common belief, it IS free from the BFPO offices at Ruislip to the BFPO address, but we do have to charge for shipping to the BFPO offices. This is inexpensive compared to international shipping!

BFPO addresses must be entered into the SHIPPING ADDRESS fields as per below. Remember for the billing address you must still enter the address the card is registered at:

VAT ON BFPO ORDERS

All items have to be shipped to the BFPO central UK office address, and as a result we cannot deduct VAT when shipping because we cannot indicate to the HMRC that the items have been shipped by us to a tax free address. To obtain a VAT refund please wait until the goods have been delivered to you, and then contact us to confirm. We can then obtain proof of delivery to satisfy the HMRC and process a VAT refund.

Correct Way To Buckle Ski Boots | Edge & Wax Guides

Fitting your ski boots correctly at the start of each day is essential to a comfortable day on the slopes. By locking the foot in the correct position, holding the ankle securely, you will have a comfortable fit, improved toe room and a positive feel when skiing. Here are a few DO’s and Don’ts when putting your boots:

DO NOT march around the resort with everything undone, until you get to a piece of snow to ski on. This just bangs your toes against the front of the boot, and is unstable too!

DO NOT rush putting on your boots. The extra couple of minutes taken following the steps below will pay dividends, and if you rush putting your boots on, you will only need to stop later and sort it out. Better to do it right in the boot room rather than on snow on the mountain!

DO find a quite spot in the boot fitting room, we always recommend avoiding the crowds and the scramble for the slope and finding a quiet corner or time to put your boots on.

PUTTING YOUR SKI BOOTS ON

3. Get your ski boot and pull the tongue out and away from you. Do not pull it straight away from you but off to the outside. So for the left boot 10 O’clock and the right boot 2 O’clock
4. Now put your foot into the boot, pointing your toes down, and almost turning the foot in slightly rather than pushing straight down (Almost a corkscrew effect!) this allows the foot to use the space you have created by moving the tongue out of the way.

BUCKLING SEQUENCE

Follow the buckling sequence below to ensure correct fit. This is the exact same process we use throughout any ski boot fitting to give a consistent result and positive fit. This often is the exact opposite of how you have been buckling up your rental boots or old boots, but it is the correct way to get good ankle retention and pull your toes from the front of the ski liner:

1. Do up the power strap, the Velcro strap at the top of the boot. This holds the boot together.
2. Hook all the buckles onto the ratchets but DO NOT do them up!
3. Gently bang your heel at 45 degrees to the floor, to set your ankle back in the ski boot.
4. Now slide forward on the seat, and bring the ski boot back to mimic flexing forward
5. Click buckle 2 shut, no need to be too tight!
6. Click buckle 1 shut, again firm but not tight
7. Now go back to buckle 2 again, and alternate with buckle 1 until both of these are as tight as possible. This should be pulling your foot into the back of the boot.
8. Now click shut buckle 4, it should be loose enough to click down with your little finger, it does not need to be tight. Adjust it by turning the buckle clockwise to shorten and anti-clockwise to lengthen.
9. Repeat with buckle 3, again it doesn’t need to be tight! If this buckle is done up tight it WILL cut off your circulation leading to painful feet!
10. Repeat with the other boot. Then to finish stand up and give them a couple of flexes. Go skiing!

REMOVAL SEQUENCE

To remove your boots, the key thing to do is ensure you remove the power strap LAST. If you undo this first, removing the buckles becomes very difficult! So if you do this by mistake, just do the Velcro power strap back up tight, and you should then find removing the buckles much easier.
You can remove the buckles in any order. Give the buckles a little turn as you remove each one so they do not catch on the ratchets again, which makes removing your foot difficult.

Pull the tongue out and away from you, towards the outside, as you did putting them on and twist your foot out of the boot.

F.A.Q’s ABOUT PUTTING YOUR BOOTS ON:

Why do I have to do the buckles in this order?
If you follow our sequence, you are looking to pull the foot back into the heel of the boot. This relieves toe pressure, moves the instep of your foot back relieving pressure on top of the foot, and most importantly locks the heel into the back of the boot. A correctly fitted ski boot will now be holding your ankle like a firm handshake, and all your movements will be transferred to the ski, for easier skiing and more control

I am having to do buckles 3 and 4 up very tight to stop my foot moving around. What is wrong?
If you are having to tighten the foot buckles up to stop your foot moving around, then your boot is too big for you! This may be due to incorrect fitting, or due to the liner wearing out (Packing out) over time, but all the tightening those buckles does is risk cutting your circulation to your feet, leading to cold feet and discomfort

I find my ski boots difficult to walk in with them done up, any ideas?
If they were supposed to be easy to walk in, they would be called walking boots! There are however ways of helping with this. You can look at a boot with a walking or hiking mode, or invest in some Cat Tracks. These go onto the soles of your ski boots whilst walking and give you grip and damping whilst pounding the pavement towards the snow.

My boots are very difficult to put on in the morning, any suggestions?
If your boots are getting difficult to put on in the morning, this could be due to the cold environment. The plastic stiffens up when cold and the foam liner denser. So our suggestion is to take your boots to your room where they will be nice and warm, and safe, or leave in a warm boot room. We recommend you do NOT use hot spike boot dryers, if you are not certain they are correctly set. A hot spike boot dryer (Especially water heated ones) can be excessively hot and lead to remoulding or damage of your ski boot liners! If in doubt take them to your room (Discreetly) and leave them somewhere ambient and dry, to dry off overnight.

My boot has only 3 buckles, what do I do?
There will always be one buckle that you can see trying to pull your ankle to the back of the boot into the heel, so this effectively becomes buckle 2 with the others being done snug rather than tight to support the shell.

I can hear a squeak inside my ski boots, what is this?
Based on our experience here at Edge & Wax, this could be a door mouse living in your boot or even a squirrel so we would recommend serving an eviction notice. Otherwise this is just the plastics rubbing against each other as they flex. On new boots this is common and nothing to worry about. It wont be heard on the mountain.

We can consider a refund skis on a rail based system as these can be reset. Skis that have been waxed are also deemed as used.

1. Can I visit you in the evening after work?

Yes you can! We like to be flexible with our showroom appointments. Boot fitting can take at least two hours, and a full service of a snowboard or skis one hour, so if you wish to visit us early morning, late evening or at the weekend outside our normal hours, please just get in touch with us and we will try our best to accommodate you and book you in. We also have a late night opening on a Thursday night in the winter season.

2. How do I get my skis and board to you for servicing?

We want to be as flexible as possible when you need to drop in your equipment. So we offer several ways of getting your equipment to us :

DROP OFF AND COLLECT

You can drop your equipment into us for servicing, and then we will contact you when it is ready for collection. Our normal turnaround is within 7 days, but we also do offer a while-you-wait service (We will even make you a brew!). For this do please call in advance so we can clear some workshop time to avoid any delays for you. We can also offer drop-ins out of hours, just give us a call to arrange in advance!

COLLECTION & RETURN SERVICE

We offer a remote service for Full Service jobs only. For an additional £16 we will collect and return your skis/board to you using Fedex Courier.

In order to use the remote service option, secure your skis or snowboard in its bag with plenty of packing (an old blanket works well if bubble wrap isn't handy) and inside the bag please place an A4 sheet of paper with your (from) address and telephone number, and on the reverse our (to) address:

4. What is the difference between an in-resort service and yours?

Many in-resort services are very, very good we should point out. However, from bitter experience many others are not. By offering a personalised service we can we feel get the optimum performance from your equipment, even if edge angles and wax temperatures are of little interest to you. We check that the equipment is tuned to the factory specification, or the customers own personal requirements.

We do this by asking questions. We can ask these questions in a relaxed atmosphere (No hoards of people trying to hire skis!) and we can ask you in English, French, rusty German, Chinese or even sign language when Nikki is in the workshop! We do all waxing by hand with an iron, we don't use waxing tables, they are fast but we feel that a traditional iron gives better wax penetration. There is nothing better than arriving in resort and heading to the bar not the busy rental shop, safe in the knowledge that your skis or board are ready to go straight out of the bag.

5. Can you teach me how to service my own skis or board?

Yes we can! We have a the Ski & Snowboard Technician Training Facility Boot Camp right next door! So yes we can. Our training centre caters for those wishing to work in the industry in the UK and abroad, or those just wanting to learn more about how to look after their own skis and snowboards.

6. What do I need to bring for a boot fitting?

For a boot fitting, if you already have some boots bring those, along with your ski or snowboard socks if you have some. As we want to give you a comfortable fit, two things will help - Carefully cut toenails, and also trousers with a baggy leg, as we will need to roll your legs up in order to give you the best fitting possible.

What is Ski Rocker? | Ski Rocker And Camber Explained

Anyone looking at new skis cannot fail to notice that the buzzword of the moment is ROCKER, we are told skis have rocker, but what is the manufacturer trying to tell us? Is it a fad, or is there genuine benefit from it? Let us try to explain what it is, and show why on this occasion there is every reason to be excited about it!

SKI ROCKER – A SHORT HISTORY OF ROCKER

There are many origins of rocker drawing from other sports, and even hardware ‘accidents’. Water ski design shows how a rockered ski style can be applied for float, and the late and legendary Shane McConkey persuaded a couple of engineers at Volant to produce the first true rocker ski used in anger – the Spatula in 2001, which ultimately went into production a year later. But rocker was still seen for a while as the technology for the deep powder skier

Until recently, snowboarders had the idea of rocker for all mountain use to themselves. Effectively what rocker does is have a rising tip and tail, so on a rockered snowboard, the centre of the board was touching the surface, and the tip and the tail were noticeably lifting up. This meant in soft powder conditions, the board floated beautifully. However, on a hard piste, you had little edge engaging when turning so it made for a very difficult ride.

SKI ROCKER – THE EVOLUTION

Before rocker came along to skis, ski designers relied on length, width and side-cut to change the behaviour of ski. Recent times saw skis get shorter and the side-cuts more aggressive to produce what are known as carving skis, fantastic for the piste, but these were narrow in the waist. Then manufacturers widened the waists for off piste use, but that meant going longer on your skis again to get a nice side-cut on them, to allow you to turn.

So for the off piste skier, rocker was borrowed from the world of snowboarding, to produce rocker skis that could float like a butterfly on powder:

This was great for powder lovers, but for the rest of the skiing public, who would spend time on piste, the existing camber technology worked fine on the piste:

a camber ski, pressing the ski into the snow to turn creates a long working edge for carving

What was needed was a solution that blended these two ideas, rocker and camber, that allowed a ski to float off piste, but still carve like a shorter carving ski. Doing this would then give you a slightly longer ski that would float in the powder, but when on the piste would ski a lot shorter, with a good edge contact, to give you a carving turn. And they did this by moving the contact point on a cambered ski backwards and forwards. Forwards for a more piste orientated ski, and backwards for softer snow conditions. K2 were the first to fully launch this idea, and it proved a big hit in the 2010-11 season, and now all ski brands offer a range of skis either with this camber/rocker mix, or full rocker for pure powder skiing

Manufacturers give rocker, camber and the mixture a variety of tags to make them unique, but really there are only so many ways you can rocker or camber a ski, here are the key terms and an explanation:

EARLY RISE SKI ROCKER

This means the tip of the ski rises earlier than on a traditional camber ski. This is the most popular rocker/camber mix out there. It means the tip of the ski floats better off piste, you can ski a little longer for even more float, and yet when you tilt and press the ski into the turn, the slightly shortened edge engages, thanks to the ski camber, and away you carve!

ALL TERRAIN SKI ROCKER or FLOW RIDE

Generally 30% of the tip is lifting early, giving you great float, but you still have a lot of edge to press into the turn, so when you do carve, in effect 100% of the edge is in contact with the snow. K2 All-Terrain Rocker is on the majority of their A.M.P (All Mountain Product) skis, which makes these good all mountain skis, that can ski most snow conditions. Head call their version of tip rocker FLR.

SPEED SKI ROCKER or S-ROCKER

This is a short rocker at the tip of around 10%, this means 90% of the ski base is in contact all of the time, going up to 100% when carving. So aimed more at the piste skier this, but the slight rise allowing you to ski in softer snow more easily.

CATCH FREE SKI ROCKER or FLOW RISE

K2 developed Catch Free Rocker a couple of seasons ago. They realised early on, that for a beginner, having some rocker in the tip and the tail made the ski easier to start to turn and release from turns, inspiring confidence. With Catch Free Rocker, 20% of the tip has rocker, and a small increase at the tail, so the ski also skis a little shorter, further inspiring confidence for the beginner. So not only heli skiers benefit from rocker!

EVEN SKI ROCKER or JIB SKI ROCKER or FLAT

These types of rocker are seen frequently on park or jib skis. There may be little if any camber in the ski (hence FLAT!) but even tip and tail rocker, to allow for playful tricks in the park and on ramps and rails. These can also be found on some entry level skis with minimal camber and tip and tail rocker to allow for easier turns

POWDER SKI ROCKER OR FLOW ROCKER

As it says on the tin, 50% approx. of the front of the ski has a rocker, to get the tip to float in the powder. Having a flatter (but still cambered) rear ski section allows it to track in powder and feel rock solid, but also gives it the ability to carve still, on firmer pistes, unlike full rocker

FULL SKI ROCKER

For the powder addicts and heli-skiers only, and also some park skis will come with full rocker for incredibly easy spins in the park.

Wearing a helmet is still a personal choice in most resorts, but most skiers seem to have made the decision to wear one. We think wearing a helmet is the only way to go out on the mountain. You have the obvious safety benefits of protecting yourself; you just never know what is round the corner, or what is coming up from behind you.

Modern helmets also protect you against the cold on chillier days, but have enough ventilation or adjustment to allow airflow through so even spring skiing is comfortable with a helmet on. Some models allow you to fit audio systems even wireless phone systems, allowing you to listen to your music or voicemail on the way up the mountain but still allow you to hear what is going on around you.

Remember that you should change your helmet after a big fall, to ensure the same level of protection next time you have an incident. And if you lose a helmet pad or earpiece, we keep a wide range of spare parts in stock.

SIZING SKI HELMETS AND SNOWBOARD HELMETS

Ski helmets and snowboard helmets come in a variety of shapes as well as sizes to suit different head shapes. The key measurement you need when sizing a ski helmet or snowboard helmet is the circumference of your head; take a fabric tape measure (Or use a piece of string) to measure around your head at is largest point (normally just above the eyebrows) and this will give you your head circumference. Helmets are then sized according to this measurement.

Some helmets such as selected models from Giro offer a dial fitting system to give a wider range of adjustment to fine tune the fit, which also allows you to wear a skull cap if it very cold, adjusting the fit accordingly.
